MALT Endorses Charitable Conservation Easement Integrity Act
The Jan. 18 headline of “Daines Bill Would Block Conservation Easement Abuse” was accurate, but would perhaps also benefit by a brief explanation. Senator Daines and the Land Trust Alliance have worked together to introduce the Charitable Conservation Easement Program Integrity Act of 2019. This effort and this bill support traditional conservation easements with farm and ranch families, and the bill is introduced with strong support from the Montana land trust community. The MALT membership is appreciative of the efforts by Senator Daines and the Alliance on this issue.

MALT Applauds Sen. Daines Introduction of Charitable Conservation Easement Program Integrity Act
The Montana Association of Land Trusts applauds and endorses the introduction of the Charitable Conservation Easement Program Integrity Act of 2019 by Montana Senator Steve Daines. The bill seeks to eliminate the ability of partnership investors to profit from the donation of a conservation easement on land held for a short time. Like legislation first introduced during the previous Congress, this bill’s language makes clear that conservation easement donations, like other charitable donations, are not intended to be profit opportunities. Montana is a national leader in private land conservation, and land trusts have been working with Montana landowners to voluntarily create traditional conservation easements for over 40 years, conserving land and water and helping maintain the essence and character of Montana.

Two Land Trust Leaders Appointed to GO-MT Advisory Council
Two land trust community members have been appointed by Governor Steve Bullock to serve on the GetOutdoors Montana (GO-MT) Advisory Council, an advisory wing for the Governor’s Office of Outdoor Recreation. Jennifer Doherty, director of lands for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and Kendall Van Dyk, managing director for The Montana Land Reliance, were appointed as part of the 12-member advisory council on Jan. 11.
