Executive Director
The Montana Association of Land Trusts (MALT) seeks an exceptional Executive Director to lead and serve Montana’s coalition of land trusts and affiliate members.
At a time when Montana is rapidly changing, MALT and its members are working with willing landowners to conserve open landscapes, sustain family farms and ranches, protect clean water and wildlife habitat, and preserve the qualities that make Montana the “Last Best Place.”
The Executive Director will lead MALT’s strategic priorities, strengthen the organization and its statewide coalition, advance conservation policy and funding, and help build the capacity of member organizations. As MALT’s public face, the Executive Director will cultivate strong relationships with members, partners, donors, government agencies, elected officials, and other stakeholders.
Position Overview
- Position: Executive Director
- Location: Remote within Montana
- Salary: $110,000–$125,000
- Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package, including health coverage, retirement match, and vacation leave
- Travel: Regular travel to Helena during the state legislative session, as well as occasional regional, statewide, and national travel
Shared office space with a MALT partner organization may be available.
Key Responsibilities
The Executive Director will:
- Serve as MALT’s voice on state conservation policy and coordinate with partners on federal policy matters
- Represent MALT publicly and communicate the value of voluntary private land conservation
- Strengthen relationships among MALT’s members and convene opportunities for collaboration, learning, and coalition building
- Develop productive partnerships with nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, elected officials, and other stakeholders
- Build relationships with foundations, government funders, and individual donors while pursuing grants and other funding opportunities
- Work with MALT’s Board of Directors and fiscal sponsor to prepare and manage the annual budget and administer grant contracts
- Support effective Board meetings, development, recruitment, orientation, and training
- Supervise staff, lobbyists, and other contractors
- Guide member and external communications
- Plan and facilitate MALT’s annual member meeting
Candidate Profile
MALT is seeking a collaborative, inclusive, and strategic leader who can bring diverse viewpoints together and build durable relationships across Montana’s conservation community and political spectrum.
Successful candidates will bring:
- At least three years of senior management experience
- Experience developing and executing organizational or departmental strategy
- A sincere commitment to MALT’s mission and vision
- Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills
- Experience developing alliances and partnerships
- Familiarity with private land conservation issues in Montana
- The ability to work effectively with funders, partners, public officials, and multiple constituencies
- Sound judgment, integrity, diplomacy, and the ability to establish organizational priorities
- The ability to communicate MALT’s work in a compelling and authentic way
Experience supervising staff or contractors is highly preferred. Additional experience in nonprofit leadership, private land conservation, fundraising, fiscal management, public policy, Board relations, advocacy, or group facilitation is beneficial.
