Title: MALT Presents at Montana Ambassadors Conference
Summary: From MALT executive director Glenn Marx: The Montana Ambassadors met on March 19-21 in Big Sky under the theme of “From the Mountains to Main Street: Transitioning Montana Tourists to Montana Investors.“ The Ambassadors, established in 1984, are a group that supports the Governor of Montana's efforts to improve Montana's economy and quality of life. I was part of a panel discussion on Friday morning with a vice president of Dick Anderson Construction, a vice president of NorthWestern Energy and the executive director of the Montana Budget and Policy Center, gathered within the panel topic of “How We Maintain the Last Best Place.“ I pinch hit for Gallatin Valley Land Trust's Penelope Pierce, who had a scheduling conflict, and told the gathering that land trusts and conservation easements have existed since 1976 for the precise purpose of maintaining the Last Best Place. Based on the Travelers for Open Land model and the Ambassadors' mission, I also discussed open land as an asset, both to our economy and our quality of life. Two general truisms and an opinion: We tend to lose what we take for granted. We tend to take for granted what we don't appreciate. So we need to appreciate open land, to help make sure we don't lose it. A simple concept in a complicated world.
